In Senegal, West Africa, 500 hyper–technological European fishing vessels enter the Senegalese waters and legally pull out everything they can find in the sea for the affluent across Europe.
Subsistence fishermen in Senegal spend long days out at sea chasing fish stocks that are all but gone. The European vessels have radars and GPS for detecting the fish. The Senegalese fishermen try to detect the fish by looking at the movements of the water, the reflection of the moon on the scales and using special amulets provided by the spiritual guides of the villages.
Fishing deals are signed between the European community and Senegalese politicians with no consultation with the local fisherman.
The experts say that in ten years time there will be no more fish in the water of Senegal.
Cry Sea is an intelligently pieced documentary that considers issues of sustainability, the decisions made by the European Union and the impact it has on the micro-communities of its African counterpart.
