Private Cable Cars of Wellington

World Premiere

New Zealand 2006 / 17min.
Directors Paul Wedel, Steve O'Rourke / Producer Steve O'Rourke

Wellington Harbour is bound by steep hills and dramatic terrain. In most cities, the unforgiving slopes would be untouched and left undeveloped due to the challenge of access and construction.

The people of Wellington however have embraced their geography, perching houses on daunting hillsides and constructing private residential cable cars to reach their properties. An estimated 300 private cable cars now operate in the city and each has a personality as charming as the people who ride them. Cable cars are truly part of Wellington’s treasures and icons.

Private Cable Cars Of Wellington is the story of the relationship of the cable cars with the people, geography and fabric of the city.
