A peasant woman who courageously stood up to a culture of silence, Mukhtaran shook her own family, her small village, and ultimately her nation’s justice system to its core.
Normality was subverted for Mukhtaran when her brother, Abdul, was accused of raping a woman from a higher caste. Invoking tribal law, Mastoi men beat and sodomized Abdul before raping Mukhtaran. The village stood by and watched and did not lift a finger to help them.
