Director/Producer John Di Stefano.
Director Di Stefano’s autobiographical film examines the search for home within our era of transnational displacement. As the son of immigrants, the filmmaker examines shifting notions of home and belonging within the context of his ethnic origins, but also extends into the realm of national and sexual identities and affiliations.
The film chronicles his trajectory from his ancestral home in Italy, to his native Canada and beyond. It weaves a compelling and contemporary portrait shaped by memories of the past and the realities of the present.
Di Stefano suggests alternative and complementary spaces, such as the airport and certain public spaces, as sites of belonging. He challenges how geography and architecture relate to traditional notions of homeland.
Using the family film archives, the film re-reads and re-traces pivotal events in his life in order to uncover hidden or forgotten meanings and memories. The director reconciles the personal
with the social and the everyday with history.
Di Stefano suggests the camera can act as a potentially transformative device by recording the past and assisting us to look mindfully towards the future.
You Are Here is a meditative and critically reflective work in the tradition of the “essay film” by filmmakers such as Chris Marker,
Harun Farocki and Jonas Mekas.
