Press Release: 5 July 2007 New Zealand’s First Carbon Dioxide Free Film Festival

We’re putting action to words and becoming a responsible world citizen. We are New Zealand’s first CO2 free festival.

Film festivals use up huge amounts of energy and have a high greenhouse gas output—they use a lot of power reviewing the films and screening them in the cinema; there’s lots of traveling, and delegates fly from all over the world to attend the festival.

DOCNZ is proud to announce that it is the first New Zealand film festival to seek to become carbon dioxide (CO2) free.

Alex Lee, Founding Trustee and Co-director, says “Almost everything we do in our lives contributes in some way to global warming. Like the old adage “Actions speak louder than words” we strive to, not only screen global warming and environmental films, but also take action to help our planet. DOCNZ is committing to try to reduce the emissions and to work positively to attempt to neutralize any such usage. We encourage everyone to take a similar stand.”

DOCNZ welcome as a festival partner, Carbon Planet, an Australian company that retails carbon credits to organizations and individuals to offset their carbon dioxide emissions and reduce global warming. Carbon Planet will assess DOCNZ’s emissions—everything from delegate travel to film screenings—and help us by recommending strategies to further reduce future emissions and offsetting in line with our commitment to help to fight global warming.

DOCNZ will announce shortly its slate of award winning and critically acclaimed films on global warming and the environment for DOCNZ 2007.
