DOCNZ: Documentary New Zealand Trust

Press Release: 22 Nov 2007 DOCNZ 2007 forecasted the Academy Awards

Public and critical acclaim for the 2007 DOCNZ International Documentary Film Festival which has just finished, continues to be received far and wide from within New Zealand and abroad.

However, it is the almost uncanny ability of the DOCNZ organizers to pick out features that are groundbreaking and forecasting their success that is adding to the esteemed DOCNZ Festival. In 2006, Blood of Yingzhou District was selected for the DOCNZ Festival and the then relatively unknown film, went on to win the 2007 Oscar for Best Documentary Short.

In 2007, no less that five of the films screened in this year’s festival have just been short listed for the 80th Academy Awards, to be held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California in February 2008.

Nanking, Please Vote for Me, Operation Homecoming and The Rape of Europa have all been made the shortlist for the ‘Best Documentary’ category, while Freeheld has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Documentary Short’ category.

With the 2007 DOCNZ season proving to be an unbridled success and it’s forecasting of potential Oscar nominees, one can only imagine what the 2008 DOCNZ season will have in store for a still growing populous of budding film makers and emerging fans of the genre.
