DOCNZ E-Newsletter

#12–Feb 2008

Since 2004 Documentary New Zealand Trust (formally known as DOCNZ Trust) has been a pivotal force in promoting the documentary genre.

Beyond the running of DOCNZ Festival, the Trust’s signature documentary showcase event, the Trust has evolved as one of the leading organisations within the industry taking on an advocacy role whilst providing on-going educational programmes and market opportunities for local filmmakers.

This year, the Trust will introduce additional initiatives; DOCNZ Focus, a film society comprising of a programme of 6 documentaries shown during the course of the year and DOCNZ Market, the Festival’s first video library for industry professionals such as TV buyers, distributors and sales agents.

Here is the latest from the DOCNZ Hub.

The DOCNZ Team

1. Coming Soon—DOCNZ Focus

DOCNZ Focus is a high-caliber programme of 6 documentaries shown over the course of the year. This will be a limited opportunity to catch a smorgasbord of films that have been highly awarded internationally, including Oscar nominated films, classics, New Zealand premiere documentaries and maybe even a surprise thrown in! Here is your chance to purchase a membership that will entail entry to the full season of 6 documentaries plus benefits, discounts and access privileges to the Festival and Summit. The programme will consist of 6 types of documentaries:

We look forward to announcing the DOCNZ Focus 2008 lineup as well as details on how to join in the next newsletter.

2. Film News

Congratulations to Cynthia Wade, director of Freeheld, who has won an Oscar at the 2008 Academy Awards for Best Short Documentary. Freeheld screened in competition at DOCNZ Festival in 2007. We are excited that for the second year in a row, a film that has premiered in our New Zealand festival has gone on to win an Oscar.

3. DOCNZ 2009 Pitching Forum is Open for Submissions

Got a brilliant documentary film idea? Here is your chance to pitch it to local and international commissioners/buyers and secure funding for it!

Following the success of the DOCNZ Pitching Forum in 2006 and 2007, we are now open for submissions for the next Pitching Forum which will be held during the DOCNZ Summit in February 2009.

An Entry Form and Regulations are available to download on the DOCNZ website.

Deadline for Submissions is by 4.00pm, 31 July 2008.

4. Festival Highlight

In each newsletter we will highlight another documentary film festival from around the world.

This month we feature Visions Du Reel held in Nyon, Switzerland. If you happen to be in Europe in this year, don’t miss Visions Du Reel held 17–23 April. Every year, for seven days in April, the international film festival turns Nyon into a hotspot for film professionals. The festival programme consists of the International Competition, competition for first films, Special Screenings, and the Doc Outlook-International Market.

5. DOCNZ Market

A fresh initiative is the launch of DOCNZ Market during the DOCNZ Summit 2009. This is an opportunity for buyers, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents and festival programmers to view a catalogue of selected films from those submitted to DOCNZ 2009. This is an exciting trade and industry event for festival visitors to view films at times to suit them.

All films submitted to the DOCNZ 2009 may be considered for DOCNZ Market. A fee will be payable for films selected to participate in DOCNZ Market. More details will be available soon.

6. Welcome

Documentary New Zealand Trust would like to welcome our new interns for 2008.

Jessica Kellner from Germany and Erin Zingales from the USA will both work on funding, sponsorship and business development. We also welcome Sebastian Heinrich from Germany, who will assist us with film submissions and the production of the 2009 edition of the film festival.

Interns play a significant role in the planning and building the various events of DOCNZ and we are proud to work with Jessica, Erin and Sebastian this year.

We also welcome back Diana Kluge. After a trip back home to Germany, Diana will resume her part-time voluntary role with DOCNZ as Development and Operations Officer.

The interns and the volunteers play a crucial role in the organisation as the Board continues to strive to provide an ambitious programme worthy of a world class festival despite limited funding.

7. Deadlines Reminder

The French Film Festival is introducing a Short-Doc-Film Competition. Entries close 31 March 2008. Details are posted on the festival’s website www.frenchfilmfestival.co.nz.

DOCNZ 2009 is now open for submissions. The new Rules & Regulations and an Entry Form can be found on our website: http://www.docnz.org.nz/festival/filmmakers.html.
