1. DOCNZ Summit 2009

Spaces are still available, register today!

DO YOU CARE ABOUT OUR DOCUMENTARY INDUSTRY?

We encourage you to sign up for the Summit and to take advantage of the great line-up of master classes and seminars this year. We highly recommend the session on Tuesday morning about the future of documentary filmmaking in NZ. For the first time in a public forum at DOCNZ Summit, the Minister of Arts and Culture, the NZ Film Commission, Creative NZ and NZ on Air will be discussing this issue.

Chris Finlayson, Minister of Culture, Arts & Heritage, will make a key note address about the documentary film industry in New Zealand, the first such key note address since becoming Minister. He will be joined by Marilyn Milgrom, Head of Development, New Zealand Film Commission; Glenn Usmar, Television Manger of NZ On Air; Cath Cardiff of Creative NZ, Julia Overton of Screen Australia and Hans Robert Eisenhauer, Commissioner of ZDF/ARTE Germany as they discuss the best practice model for our documentary film industry. This is part of DOCNZ Summit 2009 which runs next week on 23 - 25 February.

Other sessions and master classes include:
- Digital Revolution (how to and distribution)
- Extreme Camera
- Talk to Me (the art of interviewing subjects)
- Are You Joking or Are For Real (humour in documentaries)
- Is the D-Word a Bad Word (Does "documentary" need to become "sexy")

Please tell your colleagues about the Summit and help us to make it a successful industry event. Registration is open for a single day or the full 3-day Summit.

Expanding Documentary 2009

The seventh biennial Expanding Documentary Conference will be held in Auckland, at the Gus Fisher Gallery, 21-22 February 2009 (just before DOCNZ Summit).

2. DOCNZ Focus – Shooting Women

The next DOCNZ Focus screening will be held on 24 February at 6:30pm at the Academy Cinemas (44 Lorne Street, Auckland CBD).

Shooting Women, by Writer/Director/Producer Alexis Krasilovsky, is a global documentary about camerawomen who survive the odds in Hollywood, Bollywood and beyond.

Director Alexis Krasilovsky will attend the screening. Filmmaker Annie Goldson will facilitate a Q & A session afterwards with Alexis and Mairi Gunn (who also appears in the film). Everyone in the industry is encouraged to attend and support this event.

DOCNZ Focus screenings are open to the public. You may join as a member or attend single sessions ($15.00). WIFT members’ special price is only $12.00. A group discount (10 or more) is available too. Bookings and tickets are available on our website.

3. DOCNZ Festival – Opens 26 February at Rialto Newmarket

The 4th edition of DOCNZ Festival will commence Thursday (26/2) next week at Rialto Newmarket. A total of 52 films will take part in the festival this year and some are competing for NZ and international awards. The winners will be announced on the 25th.

Tickets are now on sale at Rialto Newmarket and some sessions are almost sold out, so check the programme and get tickets now to avoid disappointment.

We recommend taking advantage of the Multiple Tickets Discount. This discount allows you to buy 5 or more tickets for any combination of sessions at the same venue for $12.00 instead of the usual $15.50. These 5 or more tickets can then be divided among your friends and family as you see fit.

Check out the new Festival Website which was created by Justine Flanagan and Andy Kirkwood of Motive. The Wellington based duo has done an amazing job creating a first-class festival website for DOCNZ 2009. Thanks to Justine and Andy for your continuing support.

Programmes are already available at Rialto Newmarket and around town. You are also able to download a PDF programme from our website or we can post to you a programme upon request. Programmes are also available in Wellington (Regent on Manners), Christchurch (Regent on Worcester) and Dunedin (The Octagon).
