The DOCNZ Goethe-Institut Documentary Scholarship
The DOCNZ Goethe-Institut Documentary Scholarship recipient will travel to Germany,
undergo an intensive German language course and work on his or her project through a tailored programme put together
by Goethe-Institut and the German documentary industry.
We are looking for a filmmaker and /or producer wanting to:
- Re-focus and re-energize your career in documentary film-making
- Develop films of international appeal and international networks
- Continue to develop your skills through active learning and collaborations in Germany
- Learn more about the craft
- Complete a project
Rules and Regulations
The DOCNZ Goethe-Institut Documentary Scholarship is open to filmmakers meeting the following criteria:
- You are a producer and/or director holds New Zealand permanent residency or citizenship.
- You are aged 30 years and above and at an early/mid-point stage of career or at the point in a
current film career where you wish to make a shift to focus on documentary film-making.
- You have a passion for documentary film-making and believe you have the talent and creativity to become an internationally
renowned documentary film-maker.
- You have demonstrated creative excellence or the potential to achieve creative excellence.
- You have a keen interest to develop both as a creative and entrepreneurial film-maker.
- In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, both DOCNZ and Goethe-Institut invites film-makers to submit projects
based on the theme "East Meets West" but will also consider all other projects.
- You have a project which you wish to develop in Germany which is realisable. Your application should include a written proposal
stage with supporting documents (written and/or audio-visual).
- You will pitch your film project in person to a jury during the DOCNZ Summit 22-25 February 2009. You have a total of 7 minutes to do an
oral pitch and you may support your pitch by way of your written materials and use audio visual materials like a DVD or PC software projected onto
a large screen. The panel has 8 minutes to ask questions about your pitch which you are expected to answer.
- You are prepared to define your objectives for the programme and report to the Documentary NZ Trust and the Goethe-Institut
on how you spent your time in Germany towards meeting these objectives.
- You will be required to fill and submit an application form and submit this together with all supporting documents,
show reels and references. You may also be required to attend an interview when short-listed.
- You have no prior criminal convictions (other than minor traffic offences).
- You have never been refused entry to or been deported from any country.
- You will advise us of all known medical conditions. We reserve the right to take into consideration whether any medical
condition is likely to impair the recipient's ability to maximise his or her opportunities and to meet his or her obligations during the scholarship.
- The recipient will have his or her world premiere of his or her project at the DOCNZ and the international premier at a German film festival.
He or she will also be required to attend all promotional and public relations events to promote The DOCNZ Goethe-Institut Documentary Scholarship.
- Complete applications must be received by 3pm 13 February 2009. Finalists will be advised on 20 February 2009
